How to Install a Remote Starter for a Toyota Corolla

How to Install a Remote Starter for a Toyota Corolla

Remote starters are not available as a factory option on the Toyota Corolla, but they may be installed aftermarket by anyone with the proper tools and a strong understanding of automotive electrical systems. It is important to remember that the Toyota Corolla may be equipped with an optional factory security system and/or ignition immobilizer that must be interfaced to ensure correct remote start operation. If the car is equipped with an immobilizer, additional equipment will be required.

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Digital multi-meter Wire strippers Wire cutters Electrical tape Solder Soldering iron Nylon wire ties Assorted hand tools
    • 1

Remove the under-dash panel. This will give you access to the Corolla's ignition wiring. Locate the main ignition power, ignition, accessory, and starter wires in the main ignition harness. The horn wire may be found in this harness as well, if it is needed for the installation. Verify all wires with a digital multi-meter and strip a small amount of insulation from them.

    • 2

Remove the driver's side kick panel. This will provide access to the door lock and unlock wires as well as the parking light, brake light, and security wires. Once these wires are located and tested for function with a digital multi-meter, the wires may be stripped of insulation.

    • 3

Connect the remote start wiring to the appropriate wires in the car. Solder all connections and seal them with electrical tape. When possible, run all aftermarket wires next to factory wire harnesses, and connect them with nylon wire ties.

    • 4

Mount the antenna to the windshield. For maximum range, mount the antenna as close to the center of the windshield as possible.

    • 5

Test the unit for proper operation. Verify the correct operation of the remote start and all installed functions. Arm the factory alarm, if equipped, and confirm that the alarm does not go off when the car is started.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test all safety features of the starter before operation. Protect your wiring by installing an fuse of an appropriate size on all power wires.
