Typical Cabin Air Filter

The job of your cabin air filter is to filter the outside air before letting it go into the car. Theoretically you should change it every 12000 mile or 1 year. Practically, you should change it if you smell something weird when the A/C is on.

If you do this service in dealer, they will charge you around $70 (my dealer just offered me this "deal" yesterday). Don't let them rip you off, because the filter itself cost less than $20, and the changing process will only take you a couple minutes.

Moderately Easy

Based on your car model and year, buy a new cabin air filter in auto store or online. It's around $10 - 20, depending on the brands.

      Location of Screw

For 2005 Toyota Corolla (and Matrix), the location of the cabin air filter is inside of the drawer (passenger side). Open the drawer, you will see a screw on the RIGHT hand side. Unscrew it with a cross shape screw driver.

      Unlock and Remove the Drawer

Unlock the drawer from the screw holder. And take the drawer out of the cabin.

    • 4
      Remove the Filter Cover

After the removal, you will be able to see the location of the cabin air filter.

There is a lock at each side of the filter cover. For each side, use two fingers to pinch the lock and pull out the cover.

      Replace the filter

You will see the old filter after removing the cover. Pull it out, and insert your new filter.

Put the cover back. Make sure the two locks are firmly locked.

Lock the Bottom of the Drawer First

Put the drawer back. To make this work easier, you may lock the bottom of the drawer first, as there are TWO locks on each side of the bottom drawer. Close the drawer to see if the position is right.

Place the screw back, that's all!

Tips & Warnings

  • The cabin air filter for Corolla is usually suitable for Matrix as well.
