How to Read the Oil Dipstick in a Toyota Tacoma

How to Read the Oil Dipstick in a Toyota Tacoma

If you want to keep your car performing smoothly, you have to know how to read the markings on a dipstick. It's the same procedure for most cars, with some variations depending on the model. You can read the levels for a Toyota Tacoma with a few quick steps.

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

    • 1

Park your Toyota Tacoma on a level surface then make sure your gearshift is firmly set on "P" for park so the car doesn't move while you're working. Open the hood.

    • 2

Look toward the front of the car for a dipstick. It's toward the front center slightly on the passenger side. A dipstick is a long metal measuring tool with a grip at the top end so you can pull it out of its sheath.

    • 3

Grasp the ring at the top and gently pull the Toyota Tacoma dipstick out of the sheath. Wipe it off with a rag or tissue to clean it.

    • 4

Notice the two markings on the dipstick labeled "L" (Low) and "F" (Full). These mark the safety zone for the safe running of your engine.

    • 5

Slip the dipstick back into the sheath and pull it right out to get a clear reading. Look at the oil level on the dipstick without wiping it off.

    • 6

Make sure the oil level mark is between the two markings on the dipstick. If it is over the "F" marking, drain some the oil in your car. A reading below the the "L" marking reminds you to add oil until the level lies between the two markings.
